The double chin is no fun. The poor definition of the jawline, the chubby look to the face. It can happen when you are young. It can happen when you are skinny. A lot of it is dependent on genetics.
In the past the only way we had to remove this fat was to do liposuction. It is effective, but is a surgery with bruising and recovery.
Enter Kybella.
This product has been in development for a while. It is an in office injection which melts the fat. It was extensively studied in order to get approval. This is not mesotherapy. This is a well studied injectable drug. And yes, it melts fat. What you need to know:
- It is an in office procedure.
- The actual procedure takes about 15-30 minutes.
- Take Tylenol or Advil before having the injection. (Ask your doctor what their regimen is.)
- You will ice the area before injection and after.
- It usually requires more than one treatment. (Unless you have just a tiny amount) The treatments are spaced about 6 weeks apart.
- They state there is no downtime. There usually is some swelling for the first few days. The more you do, the more swelling.
- When I did my first patient during the training, she found it helpful to wear a compression garment.
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated.
- Know the more swelling/reaction, the more response you are getting.
- The worst swelling is with the first treatment.
- Pain is minimal during and after the procedure.
Kybella is good for the fat directly under the chin. If you want to go out along the jawline it is not used. The reason is the drug creates inflammation, which can cause nerve issues when going out along the jawline. The inflammation is good though to help with skin tightening.
Cost varies on how much you need. Frequently you can save some $ by buying it as a package.
