To paraphrase and quote one of my favorite authors, Dr. Seuss (also a Dartmouth grad. Go green!)
Mother’s Day 2012
- Congratulations!
- Today is your day.
- You’re off to Great Places!
- You’re off and away!
- Though you have lost the brains in your head
- And can’t find your shoes
- You are so sleep deprived.
- A free 10 minutes- nap or shower- which to choose?
You are a mom now. And you know what you know.
You will find you are not the one who decides where to go.
You’ll research the best way to sleep, teach, and eat. You’ll make lists of the options for the BEST baby car seat. You will photograph and record every last smile. You will walk with the stroller for mile upon mile.
You will giggle. You will fret. You will obsess every detail.
You feel like time is as fast-as-a-jet and as s l o w as a snail.
The world is so different, and full of surprise
When you see it anew through your own child’s eyes.
So to my Mothers out there, today is your day
congratulations! Good job!
Hip hip hooray!
You have embarked on this most impossible task, where your heart is exposed and tied to a toddler in the mask. Somedays will be up, and others be down. You may feel like moving to a whole other town.
But to quote Dr. Seuss, since he is so wise, and likely all you can muster to read as you close your eyes:
- “you’ll get mixed up, of course,
- as you already know.
- You’ll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go.
- So be sure when you step,
- step with care and great tact,
- and remember that Life’s
- a Great Balancing Act.
- Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
- And never mix up your right foot with your left.
Will you succeed?
Yes, you will, indeed
98 and 3/4 percent guranteed.”
Happy Mother’s Day to my friends and patients.
