Liposuction is awesome, and I have been doing it for over 20 years now. It gives great results, can change your body pattern of where you put your fat (love handles and thunder thighs no more), and may have health benefits. For health benefits read HERE and HERE.
So if it is so great why doesn’t everyone do it?
Liposuction is a surgery, and with surgery there are risks and changes which happen. People have tried to do noninvasive fat removal with things like Coolsculpt- which may work well for tiny areas in those with good skin tone- but liposuction isn’t going away anytime soon. It still is the most effective way to remove fat and sculpt.
What is “normal” healing after liposuction?
- Incisions are made in various places. These incisions are small. Every surgeon is different in their exact placement. I try to hide most of mine. These will form small scars.
- Sensation will change. You may have numbness that lasts for up to 6 months.
- Dimpling is not corrected by this procedure and in some instances it may increase dimpling.
- Bruising and discoloration may persist for weeks to months.
- Lumps, which are scar tissue under the skin, may form. Massage, stretching, and time help these dissipate. It is common to have fibrous healing, particularly in athletic patients or fibrous areas like the flank, back, and thigh. These hard areas under the skin soften and flatten with time. It is not a common long term issue, but expect it in the immediate time after surgery.
- Your end result cannot be predicted. There is not guarantee of specific results as to the look or how much fat can be removed.
- Risks of any major operation and anesthesia occur.
And the other thing I love about liposuction is it give us fat to do something else with. Please read about all the awesome things with fat grafting and stem cells.
