Whip out those baguettes, pizza, and pasta!?
There was just a study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal August 2022 “Preoperative Short term High Carbohydrate Diet Provides More High-Quality Transplantable Fat and Improves the Outcome of Fat Grafts in Mice.”
What?! You mean if I eat that pizza it will improve my fat transfer results?
Study:
- They looked at mice on either a high fat diet (60% calories from fat 20% carb) or high carbohydrate diet (9% from fat, 80% from carbs) or normal diet (12% fat, 67% carb) preoperatively.
- The mice ate this diet for 2 or 4 weeks
- They looked at the shape and histologic differences after fat transplant at 4, 8, and 12 weeks post transplant.
- They also looked at vascular endothelial growth factor and platelet derived growth factor
Findings?
- Both groups had increase in the fat pad volume
- High carb diet showed increased adipocyte browning (brown fat better to graft) and higher volume of fat retention, less oil cyst formation, and better angiogenesis and adipogenesis.
My thoughts?
This was in mice and not prime time yet, but I do believe diet is so important for surgical healing. Anything which shows reproducible benefits and is easy as eating more pasta, why not try it?
I will be recommending this to my patients. It can’t hurt, and will be yummy to boot.
