I love plastic surgery because it is always evolving. What I do today is not what I did 5 years ago, and I expect that will continue to change even more. So what was new at ASAPS Aesthetic Meeting 2025 in Austin?
- Big love for fat grafting. What was seen as a rare tool a decade ago is now front and center.
- The changes people face after massive weight loss from GLP medications like Ozempic, Monjauro, and others. There are the obvious things a plastic surgeon needs to address, like drooping breasts and bellies which need breast lifts and tummy tucks. But there are the facial issues which require volume and tightening with facelifts. And there may be more cellular changes as well- are there intrinsic skin changes? Changes in hyaluronic acids and stem cells? Does the rate of loss affect these changes?
- Temporal browlifts. I have started doing these, and their popularity seems to be increasing.
- Epigenetics and Regenerative Medicine. I am a big fan of this (see my involvement in Biohackr Health, which is trying to use scientific based treatments to improve health at a body/cellular level), so this is speaking to the choir for me. This is looking at mitochondrial health, stem cells, PRP, exosomes and more. But it is super important to separate the hype and marketing vs. true science. There is real science here, but as a doctor in the plastic surgical and longevity industries, I find a lot more of bad information and hype. I am trying to educate about the difference. Epigenetics involves your surroundings and habits- it determines what DNA is activated.
- Prejuvenation. I really like this concept, as it applies to healthspan as well. The idea is that you need to start doing all of these interventions EARLY. You use techniques to improve cellular health starting at a young age to age better. This involves stacking techniques that help you slow aging.
- Issues caused by prior treatments. This is something I have spoken about before, but when you are looking at doing treatments, particularly in office treatments with little downtime, is there a down the road negative effect? I went to many facelift talks at this meeting, and many of the presenters showed photos of internal scarring from prior Radiesse, Sculptra, or threading treatments. This made the facelift and fat grafting more difficult.
- Ultrasounds, in office, to look for silicone implant leaking and other uses. We now have this in our clinic to help women with prior implants know if their silicone implant is leaking. More details to come in upcoming blogs, but I am really excited to offer this to my patients. It will also be useful to look for seromas after breast reduction and tummy tuck and to identify facial vessels to make facial filler injection safer.
More to come.
