This is a continuation of my breast cancer and exercise series:
- BEFORE SURGERY:
- Shoulder range of motion
- open and stretch the chest
- strengthen the back and posture
- aerobic exercise
- AFTER SURGERY (when cleared by surgeon)
- get full range of motion of affected side and shoulder joint
- walking- great place to start
- resume pre surgery activities, focusing on shoulder range of motion, opening the chest, and strengthening back
- do not start weight training until full range of motion back
- DURING CHEMO
- “do the best you can.”
- try to be more active on your good days
- on bad days, try for shorter activities, gentle walks, and a five minute “get out of bed” routine
- deep breathe
- stretch and work on flexibility
- DURING RADIATION
- regular exercise, esp aerobic activity is thought to decrease fatigue caused by radiation
- Range of motion and flexibility
