I love reading journals because after many articles there is another article called “Commentary on:”
“Commentary On the Potential Impact of Plastic Surgery Expertise on Body Contouring Procedure Outcomes.” This was commentary on the article about a study which found general surgeons have higher complication rates than plastic surgeons when doing body and breast surgery. There were higher wound complications, infections, hospital stays, and reoperation. See the blog on it HERE.
The interesting thing the discussion brought up was this shows a statistical difference between plastic and general surgeons. Both of these groups are well trained in surgery. This does not include other specialties- “If a group of general surgeons, with their formal surgical training, has statistically unfavorable outcome, then what might be found by including and evaluating the outcomes of even less qualified dermatologists, otolaryngologists, gynecologists, dentists, family practitioners, and nurse practicioners?”
“The encroachment of all the nonqualified specialties and disciplines into the arena of qualified plastic surgeons is occurring in every major urban area in the US.”
It’s a great point. Training matters.
