This is something that has been hinted to before. Does liposuction cause health benefits other than weight and BMI reduction? Does it help insulin? triglycerides, etc?
This was a study in the March 2023 Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal, “Effect of Liposuction on Body Weight and Serum Concentrations of Leptin, Lipids, Glucose, and Insulin: A Meta Analysis.”
Meta- analysis of 24 studies looking at “the effects of surgical subcutaneous fat removal on glucose, insulin, adipokines, and lipid metabolism”. Findings:
- All studies showed reduction in weight (2.64 kg weight loss)
- All studies showed improvement in BMI
- Significant improvement in triglycerides: – 10
- Significant improvement in blood glucose : -4.25 mg/dl
- Significant improvement in serum insulin: –2.86 IU/ml)
- Significant improvement in serum leptin (-7.7 ng/ml)
My thoughts?
Liposuction isn’t just to make your shape different. I don’t think it causes much weight loss (in this meta analysis it was around 6 pounds), but it can drop you pant sizes and change your overall body shape and fat pattern.
I love that there may be true real health benefits as well. If we can improve triglycerides and blood sugars that could decrease heart disease risk and other diseases.
So yay liposuction. You aren’t just another pretty face. You’ve got some substance too.
