Every year we analyze the trends in plastic surgery. We do this by all submitting our numbers of Botox injections, Juvederm and Restylane fillers, breast augmentations and breast lifts and breast reductions, tummy tucks… you get the idea. This data helps us see national trends and trends over time. Why read it? It will make you the knowledgeable one at your next cocktail party. Facts are always good to know.
What did the 2014 stats reveal?
- 15.6 million procedures were done (this is a 3% increase)
- 1.7 million surgeries
- 13.9 million minimally invasive procedures.
- Minimally invasive procedures are the most popular option
- Botox 6.7 million
- Fillers (like Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane, Voluma, Scultpra) 2.3 million
- The rest of the top 5: chemical peel (like my Obagi blue peel), laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion
- Key word: SUBTLE
- Surgeries: 1. 6 million
- Breast augmentation 286,000. It has been the #1 surgery for 9 years now. (liposuction was before that)
- Rhinoplasty 217,000
- The rest of the top 5: liposuction, eyelid surgery, and facelift
- We are seeing more subtle changes here as well.
- The stats show an increase in breast lifts, making some think instead of doing a smaller implant, many are choosing to do a lift with no implant instead. (a great option, with the shaping I get with the vertical breast lift.)
- They are also seeing a shift to smaller implants used when patient do breast augmentation.
- There is “a rise of the behind.”
- Fat transfer, buttock augmentation with an implant, or a buttock lift are being seen more.
- It is thought in part due to celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian.
- The overall number of these surgeries though is still low.
- Reconstruction surgery is stable
- We are seeing more bilateral breast reconstructions after bilateral mastectomy. This is the Angelina effect, as Angelina has been vocal about her BRCA status and choice to do mastectomies to prevent cancer.
- Body contouring after major weight loss is stable. Lower body lift, abdominoplasty, breast reduction.
Interesting facts. I wonder when we will see some of our newer techniques like fat grafting crack into this evaluation.
