I use Tranexamic Acid in my surgeries to help decrease blood loss, swelling, and bruising. You can use it in the irrigation or give it systemically IV. Please see my prior blogs on the subject. This is another new study of TXA use. “Tranexamic Acid Use in Breast Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta Analysis.” in May issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal.
The aim was to see the effects of systemic TXA.
Study: Metanalysis of 5 studies which included 1139 patients undergoing mastectomy with or without immediate breast reconstruction. Perioperative IV TXA
- significantly reduced the risk for hematoma 7.3o% vs 12.9%
- significantly reduced the risk of seroma 11.5% vs 19.9%
- Drainage output went was 132cc less
- No thromboembolic events were in either group
My thoughts?
The difference in rates of hematoma and seroma were significant. Great information, and this just echoes prior studies. This encourages me to use IV TXA in all of my breast patients. (and tummy tuck and liposuction patients as well).
