Daxxify® is the newest Botulinum Toxin Type A competitor to BOTOX® Cosmetic. So how does it differentiate itself?
- It is supposed to last longer. The site states it lasts 6-9 months. When I went to the orientation talk (which we have to do before we can order and use it), the original testing doctors said that they tell patients it lasts 1-2 months longer. The Daxxify® rep says it doubles your length of time for BOTOX® Cosmetic. So if your BOTOX® Cosmetic lasts 4 months usually, this should last around 8 months. They think this may help some who develop resistance to BOTOX® Cosmetic. If you use less of a product and use it less often, then there is less chance of resistance.
- It is mixed with a peptide. There is some buzz that this peptide helps give a “glow” to the skin. The science states that the peptide helps attract the botulinum toxin to the receptor better, causing better uptake (and therefore better effect)
- It isn’t refrigerated or frozen. For those of us doctors in California where the plagues of wind, rain, and fire keep knocking out our grid, that is a bonus.
- It is easier to get it fresh. The vials for it are 100 units, but as their unit measurements are different, that is equivalent to a 50 unit BOTOX® Cosmetic vial. Most of my patients use 50 units, when doing multiple areas like forehead, glabella, crows feet, bunny lines, the little lip lines, platysma. This means for Daxxify® you use your own vial, which means you get FRESH stuff, which is more efficacious. They also state once made up, it lasts for about 72 hours (not the 24 of BOTOX® Cosmetic).
- It costs more. This is where it gets tricky to figure out what you are all wondering. IS IT BETTER? So the answer for me is the jury is out. It is a new product. It has been used on around 2,000 patients during the trials. It has botulinum type A just like the other brands. The fact the unit dosing is different doesn’t matter- Dysport® is different than BOTOX® Cosmetic already. What matters to me as your doctor and as a Botulinum toxin user as well is IF it costs more, does it really last longer? Is it somehow otherwise better? There is no Alle or Galderma frequent flier program with it. The company Revance Aesthetics does make filler- they have a great line of RHA® Hyaluronic Acid dermal filler products which have been used for years outside of the US.
My thoughts?
I tried it. It hurt more with the injection. I need to use a different type of sterile saline to see if the pain improves, but if it doesn’t I can’t imagine my patients liking it. It works. The question is how long will it last? I love the idea of fewer trips to the doctor’s office, which frees you up. They state the cost is really a savings, as it costs about 1.5X the amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic but has 2X the effect. But does it really last twice as long?
Time will tell. I’m excited to see.
