Microneedling for hair loss. Journal time!

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also called minimally invasive percutaneous collagen induction, involves using a device with fine needles to create tiny channels in the skin. The act of microneedling helps by stimulating the body’s healing response, promoting collagen and elastin production, which can remodel scar tissue and improve skin texture and appearance. It works in a second way by creating microchannels in the skin, which allows products to penetrate deeper into the tissue.

Summary of the literature on microneedling for hair loss

This was a review article published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, October 2021. “Microneedling for Hair Loss.” It was looking at microneedling treatments for androgenetic alopecia. They looked at the clinical trials which had studied this.  The mechanism of how microneedling helps hair growth is unknown. They theorize it is from the stimulation of the wound-healing cascade, where the microinjuries cause platelet derived and other growth factors to be released, stimulating hair follicle stem cells, and encouraging new blood vessel growth.

What we are doing at Lauren Greenberg MD for hair loss

We offer topical minoxidil in our clinic. We also do microneedling in our clinic, and we have seen amazing results with microneedling changes to the skin of the face, neck, and hands. The studies are clear that microneedling helps improve the scalp hair count. For those of us with thinning hair as we age (men and women, menopause, hair loss after covid or other illnesses), this is a great new tool in our toolbox to improve hair.

  • Microneedling
  • Combined with topical minoxidil and Age Zero Exosomes
  • No radiofrequency- we do not want to hurt the blood vessels or fat under the skin

We like that it is not a daily treatment, it isn’t systemic (like oral medications), and that it is working in a completely different way. See information on hair loss on our website.
