Niacinamide. Pretty, anti pigment, and anti cancer.

I am always trying to find things that keep you pretty AND they actually really do something. I have read about niacinamide in my board review course- it actually helps lower the rate of skin cancers (BCCA and SCCA, unclear for melanoma). And then I found this topical product that is proven to help with skin pigmentation and fine wrinkles too.

What is it?

Topical Niacinamide is a B Vitamin (B3) which has been shown in randomized blinded studies to improve skin. (see study below.) The study was done over 3 months with 5% Niacinamide. Other studies have shown niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3 is a low-cost, evidence-based oral treatment option for actinic keratosis, squamous cell carcinomas, basal cell carcinomas, and bullous pemphigoid. The issue was it was hard to find it. Now you can.

In my office I carry 15% niacinamide correcting serum.  I use it and have seen results. The formulation I use is combined with peptides, algae extract, and antioxidants to

If you are interested in the science, there are hordes of studies showing its efficacy. I have to say, this is a place where I am sad we doctors tend to learn in our silos, where dermatology and surgery don’t cross pollinate. The studies I have found about niacinamide are old . I loved this one which was double blinded from 2005. Dermatologic Surgery 2005 journal article, “Niacinamide: A B vitamin that improves aging facial skin appearance.”

My thoughts?

It is low cost and efficacious. Not just to make you pretty, but also to actually improve your skin health and avoid skin cancers. It should be part of every person’s skin care regimen.
