Quick blog, but with everyone saying they are a “plastic surgeon” these days, these are things you should watch out for.
The FDA warned against off label use of a hyaluronic acid product. This really got my attention, as I use HA products all the time. What you should know:
- Hyaluronic acid products are used for soft tissue filling. This warning is NOT for commonly used injectables like Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane, and Perlane. These products were formulated specifically to inject into soft tissue.
- This warning comes from people trying to use a cheaper product which was approved to use as a intranasal splint after surgery or trauma to reduce bleeding and swelling in the nose.
- The HA not to use for soft tissue wrinkle filling is called “Expression”
- It has been associated with swelling, tenderness, firmness, lumps, and hard nodules.
- It did not dissolve (the Juvederm and Restylane families of HA fillers CAN be dissolved) and a patient was left with an “obvious deformity” and masses in the face.
This is a gentle reminder: know who you are going to and what they are injecting. Be safe.
